💃 Management Consulting vs Salesforce Consulting🕺

What's the Difference?

Good morning, Salesforce Nerds! Have you heard of these companies, and do you know what they do?

MBB, aka Big 3

Big 4

These are well-known Management Consulting firms. A few of them even have Salesforce practices 🙌.

Consulting is broad (look at all the services Deloitte offers...). Today we are focusing on 2 types of consulting - Management and IT.

Management Consulting is “helping businesses make better decision,” but does not necessarily implement solutions.

IT Consulting is (an outdated name…and) what Salesforce consulting rolls up to. As a contrast to management consultants, Salesforce consultants’ core responsibility is implementing solutions 🫡.

How else do Management Consulting and Salesforce Consulting compare? Read on for a breakdown ⬇️

MANAGEMENT CONSULTING

Starting at the top-

What is Management Consulting? Let’s breakdown Wikipedia’s definition-

Management consulting is the practice of providing consulting services to organizations to improve their performance or in any way to assist in achieving organizational objectives.

Organizations may draw upon the services of management consultants for a number of reasons, including gaining external (and presumably objective) advice and accessing consultants' specialized expertise regarding concerns that call for additional oversight.

Does this sound exactly like Salesforce consulting to you? It is- you have the same general objectives 💯!

As a result of their exposure to and relationships with numerous organizations, consulting firms are typically aware of industry "best practices".

Management consulting is an additional service to internal management functions and, for various legal and practical reasons, may not be seen as a replacement for internal management.

Unlike interim management, management consultants do not become part of the organization to which they provide services.

That middle sentence is interesting 🤔. Do you think Salesforce consultants are “an additional service to management functions?”

Consultancies provide organizational change management assistance, development of coaching skills, process analysis, technology implementation, strategy development, or operational improvement services.

Management consultants often bring their own proprietary methodologies or frameworks to guide the identification of problems and to serve as the basis for recommendations with a view to more effective or efficient ways of performing work tasks.

Technology implementation” is 💯 a Salesforce consultant’s role! Process analysis, too!

Everything else in there could be considered exceptional for a Salesforce consultant to bring to the table? What do you think?

MANAGEMENT CONSULTING vs SALESFORCE CONSULTING

Here is the biggest difference-

Management Consulting operates at a high level of abstraction-

  • It addresses questions (but does not implement a solution. Implementation is extra 💰😉).

  • It is big picture.

  • It is a lot of research, backed by data.

Salesforce Consulting is execution of a strategy, aka implementation. The customer has decided Salesforce is the solution. Implementation requires-

  • Getting into the nitty gritty 👊.

  • Dealing with a real and tangible world 🌎.

  • Getting a client up and live on a solution ⚡️.

Further exploring similarities and differences of Management vs Salesforce consulting-

Similarities

  1. Professional Services - they exist, and get paid 💵, to serve the client.

  2. SOWs are gospel.

  3. Help decision-makers make good decisions.

Differences

  1. Implementation - Management Consultants sometimes implement. Salesforce consultants are implementers.

  2. Broad vs Narrow - Management Consultants have a broader practice, while Salesforce Consultants exist in a narrow slice- a specific technology under the big umbrella of technology.

  3. Barrier to Entry to Become a Consultant - This is a pretty big one. A Management Consultant’s journey is more academically challenging and deliberate, and has more milestones and gates. Salesforce consultants have more diverse backgrounds and there is no blueprint to becoming one.

TAKEAWAYS

1) Macro vs Micro

Management consulting is broad in all the ways. The problems it addresses are broad in terms of industry, objective, and desired outcome.

Salesforce consulting is comparatively micro. It addresses Salesforce, Sales and Marketing processes, and not a ton more.

2) Advisory vs Implementation

Management consulting is advisory. It addresses questions. But it does not implement a solution (there are usually separate SOWs and teams that manage the implementation. Interestingly, many clients opt not to implement).

Salesforce is hands-on execution. The initiation, planning, execution, monitor/control, and close.

3) Similarities

Two different versions of the same thing - professional services 🙂.
