SCENARIO

The Players -

  • The Client

  • The ERP Partner

  • The Salesforce Implementation Partner

It’s day 2 of a 5-day integration testing phase.

It’s not going well. 🫣 

The shared field mapping doc did not contain the most recent updates, causing the first round of testing to be delayed. 🤦 

There was also a disagreement on how best to validate External ID’s for mapping users to a record. 😓 

As if it could not get any worse, an entire ERP table did not have the custom fields created that were to be mapped to required Salesforce fields. 😠 

The client was not pleased. 😡 

This manufacturing client has been around for 3 decades and is relatively low-tech. Excel sheets and Access databases are still prominent here. Salesforce was implemented in the last 5yrs. Then, when their ERP was upgraded to a version with an API, it was decided that an integration with Salesforce would give the sales team the tools they’ve been asking for.

1 year into the implementation, the project team is now testing their integrated apps. And the client is not happy with the issues they’re seeing on this 2nd day 😬.

But the client isn’t sure who to blame; they’ve never been apart of an enterprise integration project before. They certainly have not been part of a week-long dedicated integration testing session.

The next morning, the client’s PMO Director stayed in her office. She directed her project manager to go to the conference room and to send the ERP partner to her office for a 1:1.

And after that 1:1 was completed, then to send the Salesforce partner to her office.

The PMO Director would ask each partner, individually, who was at fault for the issues ☠️.
