WHAT IS IT?
Chesterton’s Fence, per Wiki, is
…the principle that reforms should not be made until the reasoning behind the existing state of affairs is understood.
Using the namesake Fence to explain further-
A person who buys a property finds a fence on their land. The fence is old and ugly and the property owner instructs workers to have it removed.
The next morning, the property owner comes back to find their land is full of cattle- grazing, trampling, and 💩 on their formerly pristine fields.
That fence was there for a reason….
And think about it-
Fences are hard to construct 😅. The materials, the effort, and the time- intent and purpose are the drivers behind that construction 💯.
Had the property owner considered why there is a fence on the property, instead of simply removing “an eyesore,” the unintended consequence of his fields being trampled would have been avoided.
