Good morning, Salesforce Nerds! Are you a Salesforce user that is falling in love with the platform? You can feel the power of the automations converting your lead, creating tasks, updating statuses, and sending out emails? You message with the in-house Admin daily about Salesforce? Have you made up your mind that you want to ditch sales and join the Dark Side that is Salesforce Professionals? So how do you turn this idea into reality?

How to Transition From Salesforce User to Salesforce Admin
Accidental Admin is a common way to becoming a Salesforce Admin. For those who may have recently woke up from a long coma, an Accidental Admin refers to an unintended path that a Salesforce Admin took to become a Salesforce Admin. One example is that the previous admin abruptly left their position, and the Sales Manager pointed to the person closest to them and said π "YOU'RE UP!" πΊ
But, what if there is intent? What if a user hears their Salesforce org whispering sweet things into their ear. How can this Salesforce User set themselves up for success to becoming a Salesforce Admin? Here are 3 things you need to do -
Build a Relationship With the Current Salesforce Admin - Bring them a soda, a donut, a cigarette, whatever (in general, always be nice to your admin π). Salesforce Professionals are not only very good looking, they are also passionate about the platform and love to share knowledge!β€οΈ
Hit Trailhead - Trailheads are arguably the best company-owned, free knowledge and training resource out there. Take advantage of it! As a wanna be Admin, start with the Admin Trailmix (SF.com).
Create a Developer Org - Google "how to create a free Salesforce developer org" and pick one of the many results that are ready to serve you. Now, try to recreate the company Salesforce org that you are a user of. Feel free to start this step before you complete the Admin Trailmix. Many people learn more effectively when they are hands-on.
As a sales person who is a user of Salesforce, here are 3 advantages you have over someone who does not work at a company that uses Salesforce -
Access to a Salesforce Professional - That admin you are bringing donuts to has already trodden the path you desire to...trod. They have learned lessons that they will share with you. There are few shortcuts in life, but someone who's been where you want to be, and will share the experience with you, is one of them.
Actual, Real-Life Business Scenarios - That person who just worked Black Friday at the mall and wants to get out of retail, is ready to start their new career in Salesforce, and is grinding out Trailheads at home does not have proper use cases to apply their knowledge to. You, Salesforce User, are literally applying real-life scenarios in your org every day! You already know exactly what the input and output need to be.
A Salesforce Org to Replicate - You may not love everything about the org you are a user of, but that is half the point. The first half of the point is that it is a working org. People use it, and the business is making money using it, so it works. At some point while you are in your developer org, working to recreate your company's org, you will find opportunities for improvement. Take those opportunities. However, more likely, you will get stuck - "How tf did they get those Opportunity tasks auto-created with no Workflow or Process Builder??" This is where those 12 Krispy Kremes π© you bought your admin are gonna pay for themselves!
This is not a short path, but it's shorter than someone who does not have access to a business's Salesforce resources. As well, you will still need to actually land a Salesforce Admin job with your newly acquired skills. This is, again, where your relationship building can help. Salesforce Professionals are a tight-knit group, and your admin coworker may know of some opportunities. Or, who knows, the admin abruptly quits, and you happen to be sitting next to the manager when he points at you and says π "YOU'RE UP!" πΊ
Daily Principle
"Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth." - Mike Tyson
Change is Constant. Yes - have a plan. Yes - what you planned for will change, so consider that in your plan. A change in the path to the goal does not necessarily prevent you from achieving your goal. The more comfortable you are with change, the more likely you will achieve your overall goal.
