💃 The Best Salesforce Professionals Do This 🕺
It's Simple. It's Easy. It's Fast. It's Perfect!
Good morning, Salesforce Nerds! You’ve heard the saying “It’s simple, but not easy…”
The ChaCha is in on the proverb, too.
But what about the Holy Grail - simple AND easy? Does that interest you? Of course it does!
Today, we discuss the simple and easy inversion 🙂.

WHAT IS IT?
What is inversion?
👉 Inversion is the yang to the ying.
👉 Inversion is the bottom to the top.
👉 Inversion is the off to the on.
Inversion is a fancy way of asking the “opposite” question.
❓ The inverse of success is “what is not successful? And how do I avoid doing that?”
❓ The inverse of the business conforms to the software is “what does it look like when the business does not conform to the software, and how do I avoid a highly customized solution?”
❓ The inverse of more required fields is “how do we get to less required fields? So that the users are not entering as much data, but stakeholders still get value from the CRM?”
Another version of this is anti-goals. Here’s what that means-
If goals are the things you want to achieve - financial success, good health, and strong relationships - then anti-goals are the things you don’t want - stagnant salary, burnout, and sacrificing family time.
In other words - Anti-goals are the strategic way of saying “no”.
You are going to have financial success, but you won’t take a role that doesn’t have a clear path to increased compensation.
You are going to be healthy, so you are not going to work 100hr/weeks and miss workouts and meals.
You are going to build strong stakeholder relationships, but you will not sacrifice your family time to do it.
WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?
Why does inversion matter?
“Invert. Always invert.” - Carl Gustav Jacob Jacobi
Defining goals, objectives, and definitions of success are important, of course. It gives you specific things to commit time and effort towards.
And defining the inverse, and the anti-goals, does the same thing, on the other side of the coin! It gives you specific things to NOT commit time and effort towards, so that you can unequivocally say “NOPE.”
In the video below, Charlie Munger tells a story about using inversion during his time in the Air Force (starts at the 45 second mark)-
WHAT’S INCLUDED?
What do you get when you invert?
When you define your goals, objectives, and what success looks like, you are only defining one half the coin. You only have one guardrail.
When you invert, you create that other guardrail. You box-in the solution, and have more clarity on what you need to do to achieve your goals, but also what you won’t do, because doing so could lead to failure.
And when you’ve defined your anti-goals, you inevitably bring prioritization the table. Here’s an example-
Goal: Be energetic at work.
Anti-goal: Never get less than 9hrs of sleep.
If you have a 730am daily scrum, then you’re going to bed before 10pm.
That means you will have limited time to spend with your family after work.
And so if you have other goals - like learning another language or working out 5 days/week - you’re going to have to compromise, sacrifice, or pare something down 🤷. Throw out that second language or pare down your workouts to 2x/week. What’s your priority?
HOW DO YOU GET IT?
How do you invert?
“I invert all the time.” - Charlie Munger
Here’s the best part about inversion - it’s simple AND easy 🙌.
Change is hard 💯.
Data migration is simple 👀, but NOT easy.
Inversion is simple AND easy. 🙂
Inverting something is just one additional step - defining the opposite.
And here’s what else-
✅ It doesn’t require “upskilling” or additional knowledge or experience.
✅ It’s fast! It will take you just a few seconds to invert the thing!
✅ It’s free!
Sound too good to be true? It’s not. Try it-
Pick one of your 2024 goals - let’s say it’s to get 2 new certifications.
You know to achieve this goal, you’re going to need to study. You’ll need to spend some money on Focus on Force and the actual cert test. Cool.
What is the inverse?
❌ You don’t want your consulting work to suffer.
❌ You don’t want to miss your utilization goals (and miss out on that bonus!).
❌ You don’t want to take the test twice, because tests give you major anxiety.
Almost done. Last step is to define your anti-goals-
👉 Don’t prioritize studying over deliver integrity.
👉 Don’t prioritize study time over work time.
👉 Achieve 80% scores in 5 consecutive practice tests.
