Salesforce Professionals...Is This a Myth? Or Does It Exist?
Good morning, Salesforce Nerds! Happy Monday!
A quick reminder to check out The SalesforceChaCha Job Board, freshly updated with new postings!
A favorite interview question - “Tell me about a time you solved a complex problem with a simple solution.”
But do simple solutions of complex problems exist 🤔?
The definition of complex - “consisting of many different, and connected parts” - seems to demand a complex problem be met with a complex solution 😵?
How else to manage the “different” while maintaining the “connected parts?”
Let’s look underneath a “Simple Solution”….

A “SIMPLE” SOLUTION EXAMPLE
Imagine this - You have 50 sales users in your org. They all love you because you automated their webform leads to be auto-created in the CRM.
12 weeks ago, the salespeople were required to enter the webform leads manually. This was their least favorite task, some even skipped out on doing it 😳.
6 weeks ago, you rolled out the first version of this solution. That version wasn’t fully automated.
3 weeks ago you got it to 95% automated…and now, you proudly have it 100% automated flex!
It took months to get there, and a lot of iterations, each requiring working with a web dev, business requirements gathering, field mapping, testing and deploying everything to production.
Your users gained accessibility and visibility of data through an automated solution. You’ve made their job simpler.
But it was a tough road to get there, and it took a lot of time and iterations to get to that simple solution 💯.
WHAT “SIMPLE SOLUTION” ACTUALLY MEANS
Simple solutions for a complex problem are a matter of perspective-
✅ To the user, the solution is easy to use. It’s either invisible or a quick, thoughtless action to do the thing.
✅ To you, the solution has a lot going on. You experienced the full journey. The failed tests. The meetings with the sales managers. The scrum updates. The jira card creation, etc. And all of the time and iterations.
When users say your solution is simple, it is a testament to the time and effort you put into it 💪.
By the way, is it possible to reduce the time and iterations to build a simple solution? One substitute for time is experience. A senior resource who is amazing at pattern recognition can get to a simple solution quicker.
TAKEAWAY
So next time you’re in an interview and they ask you to tell them about a complex problem that you solved with a simple solution, you have 2 stories to tell-
✅ The story of the happy end-user, who’s clicks you reduced and biz process you automated 🥰.
✅ The story of the you, who implemented a solution the end-user loved, and that required your time, knowledge, skills, and experience to develop 💪.
