What is the Overview Effect?

When astronauts view Earth from space, they experience a deepened sense of connection to Earth and its inhabitants.

Experiencing Earth from space is radically different than experiencing Earth as a driver during I-5 in rush hour Los Angeles, amongst other frustrated drivers, a scorching sun, smoggy air, 24hr news talk radio, and headed to a job you hate.

From a Salesforce perspective, your typical experiences are meetings with stakeholders, navigating the 1990’s admin UI, and building solutions that manage a contact’s multiple phone numbers.

But if you wanna be a generalist, then the Overview Effect will be a powerful tool for you. Not only a wide exposure to all that business has to offer, but seeing how it is all connected, the objectives, the upstream, and the downstream.

How Do You Get the Overview Effect?

Hmmm, since less than 1000 humans have ever been to space, maybe that’s not feasible.

From a Salesforce perspective, space is a bit overkill. But that doesn’t mean it won’t be a challenge to obtain the benefits of the Overview Effect.

You will need to take a bigger, wider perspective than you ever had. Break your frame, regularly.

You will need to be patient with yourself, with your mind, as it extrapolates all the things.

You will need to practice, be consistent, and make it habit.

A practical technique to start is the 5 Whys. As you get in the habit of asking why 5x, be sure to stretch that number as often as possible. Ask why 10x, 20x.

Interestingly, you will often come to the same conclusion when you ask why enough.
